Department of Commerce

About the department and its courses

The Department of Commerce, formerly known as Department of Business Studies, was established in 1971 for the promotion of commerce and business education. It has been striving hard for the last twenty seven years to keep pace with the changing economic and business scenario in the country. With this endeavour in mind, the department has been taking bold initiatives in introducing new professional programmes to suit the needs of growing domestic and international business. One of the serious pursuits in that direction began with the introduction of a Diploma in Export Marketing Management in 1991. The urge to change and strengthen culminated in the diploma being upgraded in 1994 to a full-fledged PG programme in International Business, now popularly known as Master of International Business (MIB).

Encouraged by favourable corporate response and the shift in world focus on specialised practice-oriented professional courses, the department has also started master degree programmes in the areas of Marketing and Finance. Thus, apart from the MIB programme, the department is synergised by two more full-time professional courses : i) Master of Marketing Technology (MMT) and ii) Master of Finance &  Control (MFC).

MMT is an innovative course which has been introduced for the first time in any Indian University. It has been developed specifically with a view to meeting the growing demand for marketing professionals made possible by the increasing competitiveness in all shades of production and service activities. It aims at preparing young executives for understanding the dynamics, and accepting the challenges, of the marketing task.

MFC is a well-known specialised programme in the area of finance. Its introduction was necessitated by the fast developments which have taken place in the area of business finance following restructuring of the Indian economy. Among many others, the emergence of new financial institutions and debt control instruments, growing sophistication in financial transactions, and liberalisation of exchange rate management, have all made the task of a financial executive more invading and demanding. Consequently, this course has been designed to produce professionally trained young minds to match the changing demand of financial managers.
